History is filled with icons, but not all icons are created equal. Those that manage to mesmerize an audience while silent are few and far between, not counting dancers, of course. Charlie Chaplin was one of those chosen few. Apart from being a comic actor, Chaplin was also a filmmaker, composer, and businessman. The epically talented comic was so special and dear to the world, that we decided to create a Charlie Chaplin birthday post (today, April 16th!) and stun you with some Charlie Chaplin history and fun facts. Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin KBE was born on April 16, 1889 in London and quickly became a force to be reckoned with. This busy powerhouse was a lot more well rounded than one would expect and his personal life was just as interesting as his professional. Chaplin fathered 11 children, worked with women in a time in which that was considered ‘unthinkable’ and was very outspoken. In fact, it was Chaplin’s political views that ended up getting him excommunicated from America
in 1952. Talk about a mover and shaker!
First fun fact is that a Russian astronomer, Lyudmila Georgievna Karachkina, who has discovered more than 100 minor planets, named one of them after the legendary director and actor. She named the planet, 3623 Chaplin! You see, Charlie Chaplin was very popular, so popular in fact that he got a planet named after him and according to statistics, nine out of ten men attending costume balls in 1917 went as the infamous star. Now, that’s homage!
Chaplin’s sense of humor continued off stage. He once attended a party where there was a Charlie Chaplin lookalike contest being held. He placed third!
Lastly, Chaplin just couldn’t help but create controversy… even after death. About a month after his death, Chaplins body was dug up and stolen for a hefty £400,000 ransom! His widow refused to pay and the comic’s body was found 11 weeks later. Nothing held this man back from a good story.
