If that got you interested, then keep reading and find out more about what love was like in the Wild West!
Let’s Talk About Love… Wild West Style
The Wild West is a popular theme in love novels. But you will probably be surprised to learn that, in reality, love in the Wild West looked nothing like it. Common courtship methods back then included visiting the woman’s home, sharing meals or having some parlor conversation (always with other adult family members nearby, of course). If you were feeling really daring, then you could even ask to go on a walk together. Lovebirds in the Wild West, however, had none of that luxury. Courtship was rarely an option: the population consisted mostly of single men, who had just moved West looking for a new life. While finding partners for a one-night stand wasn’t much of a problem for either genre, it was a different story when it came to marriage.

That’s when a rather unusual method came into play. Remember that bit about advertising yourself for marriage? It was quite common for men in the Wild West to advertise themselves in eastern newspapers, looking for a bride. Then, interested women would send a letter to start a long-distance courtship. Once the pair had gotten to know each other well enough, it was time for the prospective wife to move west. As unexpected as that might sound, most “mail order” weddings turned out to be quite successful. Of course, things could backfire every now and then.
One famous and well-documented story of a “mail order wedding” gone wrong involved Elizabeth Berry and Lewis Dreibells. After going through the first step and exchanging correspondence with her soon-to-be husband, Berry moved west to meet him. On the way, however, her wagon was robbed by three bandits. The leader of the bunch had a distinctive scar on one hand, and for whatever reason allowed Ms. Berry to keep her wedding dress. Not too long after that, Elizabeth finally arrived at her destination and married Mr. Dreibells. She did notice something out of place, though. Not only did she find his voice familiar, but Elizabeth also noticed that her husband had a very distinctive scar on one of his hands. As it turned out, Lewis Dreibells also went by the name of Louis Dreibells, a miner by trade who also happened to work a “side job” as a robber. And so, Elizabeth Berry fled - never to be heard of again.
