The History Behind Selfie Day
While the word selfie isn’t that old, self-portraits have been popular for a long time. While it’s almost impossible to determine its origins, self-portraiture became very popular during the Renaissance. The first photographic self-portrait is credited to American photographer Robert Cornelius in 1839. Considered one of the pioneers in photography, Cornelius used the daguerreotype method to take the first-ever selfie. This method required him to stay still for 15 minutes - can you imagine this? Fortunately, we don’t have to wait that long to take a good selfie.
The modern selfie has a large contribution coming from Japan. Selfie culture in the 1990s, with video game company Nintendo releasing the first ever front-facing camera in 1998. A year later, in 1999, Kyocera released its Visual Phone VP-210, which became the first mobile phone to contain a front-facing camera. But many years before, in 1983, the Minolta Disc-7 featured a revolutionary “telescopic extender” - the first selfie stick. Considered a useless invention back then, it is now a must-have accessory if you want to take the perfect selfie.
In 2002, an Australian forum registered the first known use of the word selfie in a post by Nathan Hope. A few years later, in 2013, the Oxford Dictionary declared selfie as the “word of the year” and announced its inclusion in the online dictionary. The Chainsmokers released their famous #SELFIE music video. It was official - selfies had officially taken over social media!
