The celebration of this day comes from Irish culture and tolls tribute to Saint Patrick, as the name indicates. But who was this person? Saint Patrick is the foremost patron of Ireland, yet the celebration is a religious occasion that is celebrated annually. The day to celebrate Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, is the 17th of March. As with many saints and patron saints, the day marks his formal date of death.

It may not make a difference if you want to wish someone a great St. Patrick’s Day verbally, as it is hard to hear a difference, but written wishes are another story. As Americans, we are used to saying “St. Patty’s Day”, since it comes from the name Patrick. The Name Patrick however is derivative of the original language. In Irish Gaelic the Irish name is Pádraig and therefore the correct short version is Paddy. If you were to use Patty instead, it might cause confusion since it's the short version of Patricia or could also be the round tasty roasted thing in a burger - the burger patty.
In short; whenever you want to wish someone in writing a "Happy St. Patrick's Day" but want to sound funkier, simply write “Happy St. Paddy’s Day”.

Green is the color of the day, as you may have guessed. So it is clear as the sky at nights in the wild west, that wearing green is a must on March 17th. Ever wondered why we wear green to celebrate it? Well, St. Patrick used a three-leaved shamrock to teach about the Holy Trinity. Maybe that’s why it is said “all good things come in three”, but that is another story for another day. Since the shamrock is green, it makes a lot of sense to dress up in green clothes and to fill the Ranch with festive leafy decorations. On your hat, you may place a few shamrocks to receive more luck during the celebration.

In the early days, our Irish fellows celebrated St. Patty's Day with banquets and dances. The Church also lifted the restrictions on alcohol for the celebrations, which is probably why Patrick's became associated with drinking. Remember to drink plenty of water. And that also goes for the 18th. Remember that surviving the day after is just as important, folks! But it's not all about drinking!
