Celebrate St Patrick's Day with the perfect guide to enjoy to the fullest

St. Patrick’s Day is almost here! While we hang all those green decorations around the Ranch, why not take the time to offer you cowboys and girls some helpful advice on surviving the festivities?! After all, St. Patrick’s isn't for the faint of heart! Before you chug down that first pint, make sure you know how to survive the Patrick's day celebrations.

When, Why And Who Are We Celebrating On St. Patrick's Day?

Survival Tip #1; Know the basics.

The celebration of this day comes from Irish culture and tolls tribute to Saint Patrick, as the name indicates. But who was this person? Saint Patrick is the foremost patron of Ireland, yet the celebration is a religious occasion that is celebrated annually. The day to celebrate Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, is the 17th of March. As with many saints and patron saints, the day marks his formal date of death.

What’s Correct – St. Paddy or St. Patty?

Survival Tip #2; don’t drop the brick by using the incorrect spelling.

It may not make a difference if you want to wish someone a great St. Patrick’s Day verbally, as it is hard to hear a difference, but written wishes are another story. As Americans, we are used to saying “St. Patty’s Day”, since it comes from the name Patrick. The Name Patrick however is derivative of the original language. In Irish Gaelic the Irish name is Pádraig and therefore the correct short version is Paddy. If you were to use Patty instead, it might cause confusion since it's the short version of Patricia or could also be the round tasty roasted thing in a burger - the burger patty.

In short; whenever you want to wish someone in writing a "Happy St. Patrick's Day" but want to sound funkier, simply write “Happy St. Paddy’s Day”.

Why Is Everything Green On St. Paddy’s Day?

Pot of goldSurvival Tip #3: Wear the right color, Cowboy!

Green is the color of the day, as you may have guessed. So it is clear as the sky at nights in the wild west, that wearing green is a must on March 17th. Ever wondered why we wear green to celebrate it? Well, St. Patrick used a three-leaved shamrock to teach about the Holy Trinity. Maybe that’s why it is said “all good things come in three”, but that is another story for another day. Since the shamrock is green, it makes a lot of sense to dress up in green clothes and to fill the Ranch with festive leafy decorations. On your hat, you may place a few shamrocks to receive more luck during the celebration.

Culture And Cuisine

Survival Tip #4; Stay hydrated, eat enough and simply enjoy the day!

Delicious And Tasty

In the early days, our Irish fellows celebrated St. Patty's Day with banquets and dances. The Church also lifted the restrictions on alcohol for the celebrations, which is probably why Patrick's became associated with drinking. Remember to drink plenty of water. And that also goes for the 18th. Remember that surviving the day after is just as important, folks! But it's not all about drinking!

When joining the festive, make sure you eat enough. Adam's Ale helps to stay hydrated throughout the day, so eating is also important. Nobody wants you to transform into a hangry leprechaun. Grab yourself corned beef and cabbage while sipping on your drink. Not a fan of cabbage? Not to worry, you may want to try a delicious shepherd's pie and take a bite of Irish soda bread.

Having A Good Time

We all love the St. Patrick's day parades, don't we? Well, here is a fun fact. This is an American tradition! That's right, folks - it took nearly two centuries for Patrick's day parade to make it across the ocean and back to Ireland! Bet you folks didn't even begin to imagine that.

It is said that leprechauns are pinching from time to time. In some areas, people do pinch someone or are getting pinched. It should remind them of the leprechaun tradition. Don't take it too seriously if you are getting pinched, it could also be a lucky pinch ;).

Who Isn't Into Music?

What would be Patrick's day without music? Right, probably less entertaining than with music. Put the speakers at full volume at the ranch and blast some Irish music. It doesn't matter if it is traditional Irish music you can step dance to it or if it is from the newer generation with a little punk influence in it. One recommendation here from us; Flogging Molly always offers fun and pulls you along.
