Westbrook from Mississippi, and I am The Ranch’s Head of Company and Industry News I am here to talk about one of my favorite salty and doughy foods. If you love these breaded treats just as much as we do at The Ranch, I suggest you get to reading on the history of pretzels and why these braided delights are relevant to your game play...
The History of Pretzels in America
The pretzel has an interesting background, considering no one really knows where it came from. Some speculate its origins stem from Italy, others from Germany and although the history of the pretzel is uncertain, most food historians agree that it probably originated in Europe during the early Middle Ages.
Although this twisted food might not have officially come from Germany, the Germans have managed to take the credit as the food’s representatives, that is, until us Americans came along. It is said that a 12th-century illustration entitled Hortus deliciarum, from what was then the southwest German region, today France, contains the earliest depiction of a pretzel. Interestingly enough, pretzels had ties to christianity and were regarded as having religious significance for both their ingredients and shape. Go figure, right? Who says indulgence isn’t divine? I ain’t larkin’ you when I say it is believed that the Catholic church used the knot shape as a representation of hands while in prayer and that the three holes found within the salty delight were meant to represent the Holy Trinity aka The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. This has been documented, heck, ya’ll can even find it on Wikipedia! As time passed, pretzels became a hallmark during Lent and Easter. In fact, pretzels used to be hidden on Easter morning, just like we do now, but with eggs.
Now, fast forward to a new nation full of immigrants with a dream, y’all know where I’m going with this. The history of pretzels takes on a new twist when an inventor manages to make them smaller, harder, and therefore able to last longer on the self. This new baked invention fit perfectly into the fast-paced American lifestyle and that is when European sellers decided to tote their bags of breaded goodness and head on over to fill the bellies of American dreamers. Luckily for them (and us), it stuck.
